Cuban Shortstop Aledmys Diaz To Sign By Friday
According to Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish, Cuban shortstop Aledmys Diaz is expected to sign with a team in the next 48 to 72 hours.
Known for his cannon of an arm and his ability to hit for a high average, Diaz had a workout for for MLB teams last week and became eligible to sign on Tuesday. The 23-year-old was suspended from signing for one year after falsifying his age last winter, otherwise he might already be with an organization.
The Cardinals, Blue Jays, Padres, Mariners, Giants, and–most notably–the Yankees, have been linked to Diaz in the last couple weeks.
Diaz never hit lower than .281 in Cuba from 2008-2011, and posted a .435 on-base percentage in 2011. There’s been speculation that he could be a replacement for retiring Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter in 2015.
